All academic activities at the University of Limpopo (UL) were suspended as from Monday (yesterday) due to student protest over fees. UL joined the majority of South African universities and other tertiary institutions some of whom have been closed since early last week.
UL Vice-Chancellor and Principal Mahlo Mokgalong said Management decided to suspend all academic activities on Monday and Tuesday and activities will resume on Wednesday. “Management engaged with students on campus on matters pertaining to the Minister of Higher Education and Training’s recent announcement on 2017 university fee increases on Monday. The possible impact of the announcement on the University of Limpopo students was explained in detail to the students. Management remains of the view that the majority of our students will experience a no-fee increase for 2017,” Mokgalong said.
Provincial Police Spokesperson Ronel Otto said they were monitoring the situation closely.
