Gogo (81) migrates from analogue to digital

Masingita Majoko (81) of Xigalo in Malamulele was overcome with joy when she became the first person in the village to migrate from analogue to a terrestrial television in digital format.

LIMPOPO – Majoko received a free Set-Top Box (STB) which was connected to her analogue TV and started watching more channels with perfect digital reception as Communications Minister Faith Muthambi bought her a brand new TV. Majoko relies on her pension grant of R1 520 per month to get by. Majoko lives alone in a one-room house as her husband, two children and two have all passed away.

“It’s free, it’s clean and I am not going to sleep as I will be watching news, entertainment and religious channels and I will be able to listen to my favourite station, Munghana Lonene FM. I don’t have enough words to thank the minister,” she said.

“Digital broadcasting migration is a process in which broadcasting services offered on traditional analog technology are replaced with digital based networks. With digital television, viewers have better quality TV with improved signal and clearer audio,” she said.

“TV owners need to either acquire a STB to connect to their analogue TV or purchase a digital TV, which has an inbuilt digital tuner. An STB is a device which converts the signals from a digital TV broadcast into a form which can be viewed on older TV models,” she said.

Muthambi encouraged poor households to visit their nearest post office with their South Africa ID, TV licence and proof of residence.

“She will never be subjected to the frustration that comes with rotating rooftop antennas searching for better reception. As the department, we will be taking our digital broadcasting campaign to this village very soon in order to educate residents about this digital television revolution,” she said.

Other beneficiaries who also received free television sets and free STBs are senior citizens, Christina Baloyi-Nw’a-Tshandangoma and Marule Tsakani
