‘I am not that guy’ – Black Coffee

After tensions ran high on social media over an incident involving international award winning DJ, Black Coffee and a member of AKA’s entourage, the DJ since apologised to AKA and his fans for slapping AKA’s road manager, Tshiamo Letshwene at an event on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – AKA showed up at Kong, a popular club in Johannesburg where Coffee was set to perform on Sunday evening, and Coffee apologised to him, saying ““I’m sorry for what I did. The guy in the video is not me”.

Black Coffee trended all over social media in the early hours of Sunday morning after news got out that Black Coffee slapped AkA’s road manager right before he took to the stage at the DStv iRock Festival that took place at the Polokwane Rugby Grounds on Saturday. Party-goers were unaware of the drama that took place behind the scenes as AKA abandoned the festival, leaving fans disappointed while Coffee completed his set undeterred.

The altercation came after Coffee was preparing to perform when AKA’s team interrupted Coffee to set up for his performance. In a video that went viral early on Sunday morning, Coffee and Letshwene exchanged words before Coffee slapped him. AKA took to social media to inform fans why he did not perform, calling Coffee a ‘coward’ in a tweet.

Issuing a statement on Monday morning, AKA’s team labelled Black Coffee’s actions as “ignorant, distasteful and not of someone that is level-headed or mature”, saying that for an artist that has been in the industry for as long as Coffee has, his actions on Saturday night do not speak to his brand.

“It’s completely unacceptable for Black Coffee to have hit someone. We thought he was a gentleman and a professional. I’m sure he has something to say about his despicable and inexcusable action but in the meantime we anticipate an apology from Black Coffee to the young man,” AKA’s manager Benza said in the statement.

Despite his name trending for two days and numerous tweets by fans and AKA, Coffee did not address the incident on social media. He was, however, very civil during his run-in with AKA at Kong on Sunday.
