PCS: teaching learners to be street smart

Pietersburg Comprehensive Primary School takes safety seriously.

POLOKWANE – Just outside the school, point duty officer Ingrid Gerber stands guard and ensures that learners cross the street safely when they enter and leave the school.

She gave parents and teachers a few tips on how to stay safe when crossing the street.

“It is sad to see motorists on their cell phones and not paying attention to the road while driving, especially when there are children in the vicinity.

“It is important for motorists to be vigilant, especially when driving past schools and sports fields,” Gerber said.

She advises learners to wait in the school premises until they see their parents or transport vehicles.

“Learners must refrain from playing or walking too close to the edge of the road. It is important that they learn road safety tips and know how dangerous it is for them to run across the street without checking that the coast is clear. It is never too early to teach them,” Gerber concluded.
