WOF still battling far-reaching Lim blaze

Limpopo Working on Fire (WOF) firefighters have been fighting a raging fire between Modimole and Mookgophong since Tuesday, 20 September.

POLOKWANE – The WOF team responded to a call about a fire on the R101 which quickly spread to Middelfontein. It has since covered a vast area and firefighters are currently fighting to contain the fire in Grootfontein.

Matema Gwangwa from WOF told Review 75 firefighters are doing their best to suppress the fire and have been working non-stop to keep it from spreading to properties where it could cause a lot of damage.

“Because we haven’t had any rain in several months, the mountainous area in which the fire has spread to provides the perfect conditions for it to flourish. It is difficult to get it under control as the fuel (dried grass) is thick and widespread which has spurred on the fire,” Gwangwa said.

She added that there were no fatalities reported and the firefighters are exercising safety first to ensure they stay save. They have managed to contain the blaze in the Mookgophong area but are still trying to diffuse the flames in the other areas.
