Scrap metal shop raid leads to six arrests

The Makhado Police have seized copper wire weighing 11380 kg after conducting a special joint operation yesterday (Thursday).

LIMPOPO – A special raid operation conducted by various Police Units including the POP, K9-Unit, Crime Intelligence and VISPOL of scrap metal shops that sell copper wire led to the subsequent arrest of two men aged 35 and 36 suspected of selling copper wire illegally.

During the operation scrap metal shops in the city were also raided. At one of these shops, stolen copper wires weighing 11 395kg were found and a 34-year-old shop manager, together with his two employees aged 33 and 41 were arrested. In the second scrap metal shop, copper wire weighing 18 720kg was found and a 41-years-old man was arrested. The suspects will appear before the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of suspected stolen copper wire.

Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe said, “It was brought to our attention that copper cable theft is high in the city. We visited certain scrap metal shops and found suspected stolen copper wire of high value in the possession of the six men arrested. Each and every police station is expected to have such operations more often to deal with copper cable theft.”

He further said police investigations are still continuing.
