Vha-Venda king collects books for learners in Vuwani
The SABC and Vha-Venda king will donate books to learners in Vuwani who were affected by the municipal strikes that took place earlier this year
VUWANI – Hundreds of learners in Vuwani were left destitute after their schools were burned down during municipal strikes that took place earlier this year and although the Department of Education has done damage control, many learners are still without stationery, books and classrooms. In an attempt to assist these learners, the SABC, in collaboration with the Vha-Venda King, Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, will donate a number of books to learners in the affected areas.
SABC Spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, said the books were collected from various parts of the country and will not only be donated to schools in the Vuwani area but also other school in need of supplies. These schools will be identified with the help of King Ramabulana.
“The SABC has been in partnership with the royal house for a long time and one of its goals is to assist in the development of local communities by encouraging learners to read, and promoting education through its programmes,” Kganyago said.
A variety of books, magazines and textbooks formed part of the donation and will go a long way in encouraging learners in rural areas to read, which will be beneficial to their learning abilities.
“As the SABC, we value the importance of education as we believe educating our citizens will make this country a better place,” he continued.
He further said anyone who would like to make a contribution can drop off books at their nearest SABC studios.
The handover of the books will take place in the coming weeks.
