The u.13 hockey team of Laerskool Ivypark are the 2016 champions of the Limpopo Primary School Hockey League after their nail biting 1-0 victory over Tzaneen Primary School on Saturday. The finals were played on the fields of Hoërskool Ben Vorster.
Thorisho Mashapa scored the winning goal set up by Mikael Chetty in the early stages of the match.
Team coach Nadia Grobler described their win as a major feat for the team and the school. “The last time we won the title was in 2011. We are pleased with the team’s attitude and performance throughout the league, they did the school proud. We beat strong teams like Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos and Curro Heuwelkruin, something that was hard to do in the past.” Mikael, who played in all the league matches, said the drive and the will to achieve greatness was the reason for their successful campaign. “We had good coaches who always made us to believe that we can win every match and we did that. We also wanted to make history because for some of us it is our last year at the school and we wanted to leave a legacy and be remembered as the group of students who won the league in 2016,” Mikael said.
