CPF stresses fireworks legality, safety

Community Policing Forum (CPF) Soetdorings has called on residents to obey the law

POLOKWANE – After the news of a local boy who lost his hand in a firework accident made headlines across the country, the importance of upholding the country’s laws on the trading and handling of fireworks has been reiterated.
In light of this incident, Community Policing Forum (CPF) Soetdorings has called on residents to obey the law.
According to the Explosives Act 15 of 2003, it is illegal to set off fireworks except for a few days a year when it is permitted within reason. These days include New Year’s Day (1 January), Guy Fawkes Day (5 November), and Divali (9 November). With the exception of New Year’s Day the regulated time for Guy Fawkes Day and Divali is between 19:00 and 22:00 in the evenings.

Not keeping to the times can result in a fine of R500.
Other laws and their fines are:
• No person may light a firework in any area where an animal is present. Fine – R1 000.
• No person may allow a minor under his or her control to use or ignite a firework. Fine – R1 500.
• No person or organisation may present a firework display without the permission of the municipality. Fine – R1 500.
• No person may deal in or sell fireworks unless they have a firework licence in terms of the Act. Fine – R1 500.
