Towers to be renamed in honor of Lim’s shining star

The Limpopo Olympic Towers will soon be renamed Caster Semenya House in honour of the athlete's accomplishments.

POLOKWANE – In an endeavour to honour the South African sprinter, Caster Semenya, the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture MEC, Onicca Moloi, has decided to name the Limpopo Olympic Towers after Semenya.

Moloi said she realised that Semenya was not honoured and celebrated enough and that is why she decided to name the building after her.

“The thought of renaming the building came to me on my first day in office as the MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture on Thursday. We are going to start with the process of renaming the building in a week or so as there are certain protocols which need to be followed,” Moloi explained.

She said Semenya is an international shining star from Limpopo and deserves to be honoured.

“She is a young woman who always represents Limpopo and South Africa in all she does and I felt we weren’t giving her the recognition she deserves.

“I am an advocate for women through my non-profit organisation, Thalita Khoum Girls’ Network, which also played a part in the decision to rename the Olympic Towers after Semenya. The building will be renamed Caster Semenya House,” said Moloi.

When asked what she was planning to do for other athletes such as the 2012 Comrades Marathon winner, Ludwick Mamabolo, Moloi said she will sit down with sport federations to see how best they can honour and celebrate top athletes in Limpopo.

She said the department will host a celebration ceremony in partnership with Moletjie Royal House (Moshate) on 3 October to celebrate and honour Semenya for her achievements.
