[VIDEO] Fire Safety 101 with Fireman Rucca

For the first time in the history of the school, Elica Primary hosted a fire show.

POLOKWANE – The event was organised in an effort to educate the learners on fire safety and hopefully save their lives.
Rouan Snyman, or Fireman Rucca as he is known throughout the city, paid a visit to the school where he gave the learners tips and showed them what to do in case a fire broke out.

“People need to be fire conscious because their lives literally depend on it. Children from as young as three years old should be taught the basics of fire safety. I have been a firefighter for many years and I have seen young children sustain serious injuries due to exposure to fire, especially in rural areas, and that is why it is important for them to know what to do in case they are ever in danger,” Rucca said.

According to school manager Des Jones, they usually have fire drills at the school to prepare the learners for an emergency.

“I enjoyed the show, it was interesting and insightful. Fireman Rucca gave demonstrations on what to do if a fire broke out at home,” Grade 7 learner, Clair-Ann Peterson, explained.
