‘Show pride in your culture’

At the annual Manthata Cultural Festival gala dinner held at the Mohodi Community Hall in Senwabarwana recently, Molemole Municipality Mayor, Edward Paya, said he strongly believes working with traditional councils can contribute to the promotion and sustainability of the Bapedi culture.

Paya said it is the responsibility of both the municipality and traditional councils to ensure the youth do not forget their culture and tha they preserve it for future generations.

“Our youth have turned a blind eye on their culture,” Paya said. He said development is the municipality’s priority but they also place a lot of focus on encouraging and supporting the youth as they are the province’s biggest asset and play a critical role in its development.

“They have the capacity and energy we all need to embrace to promote growth and positive change. By encouraging the youth to work hard and create viable economic opportunities, we prepare them for the competitive job market,” he continued.

He further said the municipality has a bursary programme in place to assist deserving but financially disadvantaged youths further their studies.

Khosigadi Mankwe Manthata said it is crucial for the youth to celebrate their cultures and maintain traditions. “Celebrating their heritage and practicing age-old traditions will keep the youth grounded. Traditional celebrations are also an excellent opportunity for intercultural exchange and understanding other African cultures seeing that we having different people living together in our communities,” Manthata said.

She further said celebrating your culture and practicing traditions means you celebrate the diversity of the country.
