Giyani Mayor honours women

Greater Giyani Municipality Mayor, Sasavona Mathebula, believes domestic workers are unsung heroes and they deserve more recognition for taking care of families and household chores.

Speaking on Friday during a celebration after the conclusion of Women’s Month at Rivala village outside Giyani, Mathebula said it was important that as the nation celebrated Women’s Month, they remember to honour those who were not celebrities but still doing great work nursing the nation.

“We have women who work hard daily, either to take care of our houses, babysit our kids, or work as farm labourers in order to make a living,” she said.

Mathebula urged everyone to recognise the work done by domestic workers and other women who work under harsh conditions in order to support their families.

“The effort these women put in to take care of their families along with ours is hardly recognised, yet they are delivering a vital service to the nation.

“Most of them are often oppressed by their employers, but still carry on and work because of their dedication to support their families,” she added.

She urged women to unite and support one another as they honoured the contribution of unskilled women whose effort she said was often ignored by society.

“As municipality we stand firm on the advancement of women’s rights.

“That is why we have programmes in place to empower women and those living with disability.”

Referring to recent troubling cases where two children under the age of 10 were killed in separate incidents within two weeks of each other in Giyani, she appealed to the police to ensure the safety of women and children and to catch and punish the perpetrators.
