Ocean Basket will celebrate their 21st anniversary on Tuesday and Ocean Basket Mall of the North, Savannah Mall and Mokopane will take part in these festivities by offering their famous fish and chips for only R21 per serving.
These three Ocean Basket restaurants are owned by Lizette Deacon. Ocean Basket Mall of the North is five years old, Savannah Mall recently celebrated their third anniversary and Ocean Basket Mokopane has been under Deacon’s management for a year now.
The three restaurants will also do their bit for the environment and sustainability of the oceans by hosting a special penguin exhibition. The penguins will be at Savannah Mall until 23 September where after they will move on to Ocean Basket Mokopane from 24 September until 24 October. The exhibit will be at Ocean Basket Mall of the North from 28 October to 28 November.
During this time patrons can learn more about the endangered African Penguin and how to help save this species that can only be found in South Africa and Namibia. Guests can also buy penguin key holders at R45 each, small stuffed toy penguins at R95 and large toy penguins at R350 each.
During the exhibitions, these three Ocean Baskets will also run a colouring competition at R10 per entry. The winner will win a weekend for four in Gansbaai with accommodation, meals and shark cage diving for two included. Travel to and from Gansbaai is not included in the prize.
All profits of the penguin sales and colouring competition will go to the Dyer Island Conservation Trust. Founded in 2006 by Wilfred Chivell, the trust delivers unique conservation and research programmes in a critically important marine eco-system. They protect the largest surviving colonies of the endangered African Penguin, whose numbers are at an all-time low.
Ocean Basket is also committed to tourism in Limpopo and on 17 September Ocean Basket Mall of the North and Savannah will host the Polokwane Explorer Race in conjunction with the Polokwane Tourism Association and Municipality.
Teams of four people each will compete in an ‘Amazing Race’ type of race, learning more about the City of Polokwa-ne as they go. Entries cost R400 each and there are terrific surprise prizes to be won along the way.
To celebrate Heritage Day on 24 September, Ocean Basket Mokopane will play host to a ‘Snoekbraai and Melktert’ competition. Snoek will be provided for teams of two who want to compete in the snoekbraai-competition and the registration fee is R250 per team. The winning team will win a weekend for two at a local lodge.
Milktart kings and queens can enter their milktarts at R20 per entry and the winner of this competition will win wonderful kitchen utensils and wares.

The Ocean Basket restaurants in Polokwane and Mokopane are also famous for their Greek Nights where guests can let their hair down and dance to live music. The most popular part of these events is when guests are invited to shatter plates on the floor.
