Three labour unions comprising the Transport and Omnibus Workers Union (Tow), the Transport and Allied Workers Union (Tawu) and the South African Transport Workers Union (Satawu) are planning a protest march against Limpopo parastatal Great North Transport (GNT) next week as a result of its alleged failure to comply with statutory obligations.
The alleged failure to comply with the obligations resulted in the suspension of employees’ membership of medical aids and their benefits were reportedly suspended for more than a year.
Malinge Plaatjies, National Organiser at the National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) said: “The whole workforce of GNT at the Seshego Depot, some 300 workers, was affected by the said non-payment.”
Plaatjies said the three unions have been engaging the company about this problem for almost a month but no solution is forthcoming. They therefore decided to embark on a peaceful protected march on 14 September when memoranda would be submitted to the Office of the Premier, MEC for Transport, Mapoula Mokaba-Phukwana and the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism.
