‘Blue flash, then my hand was gone’

Four days after Kosie Wessels (7) lost his left hand in a firework accident, he is playing outside on the lawn at the family’s home in Ladanna while his dogs run around him, excited to have him back.

POLOKWANE – Life momentarily stood still that fateful Saturday when Kosie set off a bomb firework, which he found in his sister’s room, in their living room.

“There was a bright blue flash and I couldn’t see anything. When I finally could see, my hand was gone,” Kosie tells Review.

His mother, Caroline Strydom, says Kosie, a Gr 1 learner at Piet Hugo Primary School, has to recuperate at home for another two weeks before he can return to school.

“The doctor said it’s okay, the other kids must just be careful not to push or shove me,” Kosie relates what his doctor, Dr Vivian Meintjes, told him.

Dr Meintjes said Kosie is recovering well after the amputation.

“His wounds, including the burn wounds, are healing well. As soon as we remove the stitches, we will be able to better determine when he will be able to return to school. It is amazing how many people, not just from Polokwane but also from Pretoria, are reaching out to the family to help them through this traumatic experience,” Meintjes concludes.
