Dangling street light poses a danger to pedestrians, motorists

Residents of the city are asking the Polokwane Municipality to take the state of the city’s street lights into serious consideration.

POLOKWANE – This follows after residents in Bendor noticed a street light in Genl De la Rey Street hanging from the post by just a wire. That along with several complaints about street lights not working is leaving residents up in arms about the state of the city’s street lights.

The greatest concern regarding the street light in Genl De la Rey Street is that it might come loose at any moment and injure a pedestrian or cause an accident as it is held in place by some wires.
Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson, Disree Manyane, said the municipality remains committed to ensuring that all street lights in the city are in working condition and that they are able to attend to any concerns or complaints raised by residents. She said the municipality will investigate the damaged street light in Genl De la Rey Street and have it repaired as soon as possible.
She said all complaints regarding street lights should be reported at the electrical call centre of the municipality on (015) 290 2490/2524.
“The municipality checks streetlights at an average of once a month to ensure they are in good working condition. Depending on the type of complaint, concerns regarding street lights are usually resolved in a period less than two weeks at most, however,  cable faults could take longer to be resolved,” she said.
