Tensions still running high after earlier protests on N11

Police appeals to all motorists to be alert when traveling in the area.

LIMPOPO – Mahwelereng Police Spokesperson, Constable Sello Leso, appeals to all motorists travelling on the N11 close to Ga-Malukane -, Chaba Village and Witvinger near Anglo American’s Mogalakwena Platinum Mine to be alert, as tension is still running high among the residents that protested and blocked off the entrance to the mine earlier today (Monday).

Residents from Ga-Malukane and Chaba Village blocked off the road at Witvinger leading to the mine with rocks and set a truck alight in the early hours of Monday morning. It is alleged that the value of truck and the platinum concentrate it was transporting amounts to more than R3 million.

At 14:00 Constable Leso said, that the entrances to Ga-Malukane and Chaba Village were still blocked off. The road at Witvinger has however been cleared and drivers are able to enter the mine, but he said that all drivers should still be cautious.

Police are monitoring the situation.

Six suspects have been arrested in connection with earlier incidents damage to property and will appear before the Mokerong Magistrates Court soon on the charges of Public violence and malicious damage to property.
