Motorists urged to be patient on the roads – dept

"Drivers need to practice patience on the road," said Kagiso Mootane, Spokesperson for the Department of Transport, after another tragic accident on the N1 outside Mookgophong claimed three lives on Saturday night.

MOKOPANE – Mootane reported that four vehicles collided after the driver of a bakkie recklessly overtook a vehicle and crashed head-on with a sedan.

Two other vehicles could not swerve in time to avoid the accident and collided with the two vehicles.

Mootane added: “The driver of the bakkie and the driver and a passenger from the sedan died on the scene. Five people were rushed to the hospital in Mokopane of which three had sustained critical injuries and two sustained serious but not critical injuries.”

According to Mootane, the possible cause of the accident is speed and reckless and negligent driving. Investigations are ongoing.

“We are expecting thousands of vehicles on the N1 to Moria this weekend as they make their way to the Moria Pilgrimage.

“We strongly appeal to all drivers to refrain from speeding, be patient, do not drive under the influence and make sure your vehicle is roadworthy.” Mootane further appealed to all owners of cattle to make sure their livestock stay clear of the roads.
