Illegal dumping under investigation says Dept

POLOKWANE – The Department of Environmental Affairs took DNA samples of the discarded wild animal carcasses that were found near a smallholding in the vicinity of Veldspaat Street

According to the owner of the smallholding, the carcasses of animals, including that of giraffe and zebra, have not been removed yet. The department will now analyse the samples taken.

“We clearly identified the remains of zebra, giraffe and kudu. We took DNA samples and also informed the stock theft unit. We encourage anyone with information pertaining to the issue to contact the police as it looks like everything was legal except the discarding process,” says a source at the department who cannot be named as he does not have official authority to speak to the media.

Burckels Napo, Spokesperson for the Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism confirmed that an investigation was underway.
