POLOKWANE – Motorists travelling on Veldspaat Street now have to slow down and come to a dead stop approaching Outspan Drive after a stop sign was recently erected.
In an effort to reduce the number of accidents and speeding, the municipality erected the stop sign which will now make it easier for motorists to turn right into Veldspaat without taking risks. Unsafe entry into Veldspaat Street has been the cause of many accidents and concerned motorists complained to the municipality.
Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson Matshidiso Mothapo confirms that the stop sign was due to the community’s request. “It was observed and found that indeed it is very difficult for the motorists to turn right from Outspan into south bound Veldspaat road. Accidents did happen as a result of long waiting and unsafe entry to the road due to frustration especially during peak hours,” explained Mothapo.
However, the stop street is already causing several other problems as impatient motorists are now driving in the adjacent field north bound on Veldspaat to avoid sitting in traffic caused by the stop street where others are simply yielding or slowing down to third gear before proceeding. Mothapo therefore urges motorists to obey the rules of the road and take the safety of other motorists into consideration when travelling.
