Increased security at Unilim following #ULshootings

Measures to improve the safety of the students at University of Limpopo (UL) have been implemented following an incident outside the campus on Sunday morning where a 25-year-old first year LLB student was shot.

POLOKWANE – Mankweng Police Spokesperson, Capt Mohlaka Mashiane, said the student who was shot went to answer the call of nature at around 03:00 on a Sunday morning when he was approached by an unknown man. “It is alleged that the man tried to rob the student, who was shot in the leg in the process. The student was taken to hospital for treatment,” Mashiane explained.

He further said a case of attempted murder was opened with no arrests yet.

UL Marketing and Communications Executive Director, Kgalema Mohuba said that they have asked police to patrol the affected areas and other parts of Mankweng where students are housed in an attempt to create a safe environment for all.

“We urge landlords who offer accommodation to students to ensure there are security measures in place to keep their tenants safe and urge students to travel in groups when they are off campus,” he said.

The last shuttle services will now leave at 00:00 as requested by the students as many study late into the night.

“We hope this arrangement will improve the safety of our students,” Mohuba added.

Mashiane urged anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Makweng Police Station Commander, Col Angie Maloma, at 082 565 8524.

“The community and students are also urged to join forces with the police to help make the area a crime-free zone.”
