3 arrested after R1m illegal cigarette bust

3 suspects were arrested after members from the Cumberland Police Station followed up on information about a vehicle transporting illegal goods yesterday (Tuesday).

LIMPOPO – The members stopped the bakkie towing a trailer upon entering a farm next to the Botswana border early yesterday morning. Upon searching the vehicle and trailer, master boxes of illegal cigarettes were found.

Two suspects from Pakistan aged 34 and 29 were immediately arrested.

Further investigation led to the arrest of the farm foreman after police discovered a second trailer filled with illegal cigarettes on the farm premises.

The value of the confiscated cigarettes is approximately worth R1 million.

The three suspects are due to appear in the Thabazimbi Magistrates’ Court on Thursday.
