Vhembe learners discover, nurture their love for agriculture at Univen

Learners from various schools in the Vhembe region have been encouraged to consider pursuing careers in agricultural science.

LIMPOPO -More than 100 secondary school pupils who attended the school of agriculture open day event at the University of Venda (Univen) recently were advised to explore the various opportunities available to them in the agricultural industry once they matriculate.

Dean of the school of agricultural sciences at Univen, Prof AG Mchau, said the open day offers learners the rare opportunity to interact with important figures in the agricultural industry.

Most of the learners who attended the open day came from the two oldest agricultural schools in the province, Dimani and Thohoyandou High School.

“At a time when agriculture is responsible for producing enough nutritious food to feed the world population of seven billion people, the number of people involved in agriculture continues to decline.

“Agriculture today needs young scientists who can come up with strategies to fight climate change,” said Mchau.

During the open day, learners were afforded an opportunity to ask about various career paths which they can follow if they choose to enroll for qualifications in the agricultural industry.

“This is an eye opener for us, there are a number of careers we did not even know existed and many of us are suited for those careers,” said Mulanga Tshivhase, a Gr 12 learner at Thohoyandou High School.

She further said she wished she had attended similar events when she was in Gr 10 so she could have chosen the required subjects and planned adequately for the future.

The agricultural open day is an annual event at Univen.
