Cat Flu: be alert

Veterinarians have warned of an increase of Cat Flu, which has already led to several cases within the Polokwane area.

POLOKWANE – Review spoke to Dr Elandi Doktor who works at the Wolkberg Veterinary Clinic and confirmed that there is an increase in the number of cases. She said that CatFlu or Parvovirus is highly contagious and infectious and urges residents who notice symptoms to bring their dogs in immediately for treatment.

Symptoms to look out for include:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Dehydration

Dr Elandi says that because it is a virus, there is no medication to stop it but vets can provide supportive treatment. “It is important to bring them in immediately before dehydration sets in so we can prevent death as it is very infectious,” she explained. She says the virus attacks the inner lining of the intestine which causes blood in dogs’ faeces.

Dr Elandi says the virus is passed through faeces and vomit so it is important to keep your dog away from another dog who has the virus to prevent infection. “Pet owners need to make sure that their dogs are vaccinated, however, dogs who have been vaccinated can still contract the virus,” she said.

Dr Elandi also said that if your dog has had the virus, it can stay in your yard at home for up to eight months after infection and it is important to note that one shouldn’t buy a new puppy in that time as puppies are most susceptible to the virus.
