Cnr Munnik, Jorissen street accidents under question

Review spoke to a local accident reconstruction investigator to find out why there have been so many accidents at that specific corner.

POLOKWANE – Earlier this year, the corner of Munnik and Jorrison Street was the scene of two serious accidents in which two men were injured and a young girl lost her life, over the past weekend yet another serious accident occurred on the same corner.

Local accident reconstruction investigator, forensic accident investigator, Phillip Smit says the corner itself is not dangerous but motorists who take the corner at high speed greatly contribute to the risk of an accident taking place.

“When you look at the turn, it doesn’t look like a challenge, even at high speed. I believe that when you misjudge a corner like that and you’re tired and possibly intoxicated, coupled with high speed; the chances of an accident are far greater than if you approach the corner at a slow pace. This is applicable to most cases, not just this specific street,” Smit explained.

Smit said investigation into what could make the corner safer for motorists must be undertaken. He added that a lower speed limit and clearer indications of what speed to travel closer to the corner may help but in the end, speed is the biggest contributing factor to these accidents.
