20 arrests in R37 protests, more expected say police

The road is partly opened at this stage but motorists are warned to drive with caution when in the area.

LIMPOPO – Community members from Mogodi outside Lebowakgomo barricaded the R37 road between Polokwane and Burgersfort at around 03:00 this morning (Friday) with burning tyres, big rocks and poles.

“The Saps crime prevention and POP reacted swiftly with Nyalas and a SAPS helicopter to disperse the crowds,” says provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col Moatshe Ngoepe.

Stones were thrown but no damage or injuries were reported. Twenty people were arrested for public violence and more arrests are expected adds Ngoepe.

The Saps Provincial Commissioner; LT. General Nneke Ledwaba condemned these acts of violence: “Members of the community must at all times raise their concerns to the relevant authorities peacefully and without any act of violence. No stone will be left unturned, more arrests are still expected and the situation will be monitored until everything is back to normal.”
