Warning over syndicate targeting online car sellers

Limpopo police are currently looking for two women in connection with the scam

LIMPOPO – A car theft syndicate that targets people advertising the sale of their vehicles online has come to the attention of the police after three vehicles,  a VW Amarok , Nissan Navara and Hyundai i20 were stolen in Tzaneen recently.

“The SAPS are hereby warning all residents and companies who advertise the sales of motor vehicles on OLX, Junkmail or Gumtree to be be aware of con artists using false cellphone banking details in order to make the sale.”

According to police spokesperson, Lt Col Montashe Ngoepe,  during the sale complainants receive an SMS from a number similar to the one banks use during correspondence and are led to believe that the money is in their account. They hand over the vehicle and papers only to find out later that they were conned.”

Police are currently looking for two African women in connection with the scam adds Ngoepe.

“One presents herself as Primrose Kunupi.”

“They are always well dressed giving the impression of wealth and drive either a black Mezedes Benz or black VW Polo with GP registration.

Anyone with information regrading this scam is to contact Captain Claasen on 0825658265.

“Community members are advised to avoid doing transaction on sale of cars after hours, on Sundays or public holidays  because it is important for you to get confirmation from the bank that the money is indeed in your account before handing over a sold car,” he concludes.
