Dept of Transport steps up safety

The following arrests were made:

LIMPOPO – The traffic officials are working around the clock in Limpopo to secure the safety of all drivers on the roads and to reduce the number of accidents on all major routes in the province.

According to a media statement by the Department of Transport a total of 207 352 vehicles were stopped and inspected during the month of July in Limpopo.

A total of 13 828 drivers were tested for alcohol of which 196 were arrested for drunken driving.

A total of 27 980 drivers were issued notices.

A total of 2 804 drivers were charged for not wearing their seat-belts.

The following arrests were made: Eight people were arrested for excessive speed, 17 for reckless and negligent driving, seven for overloading, 486 for warrants that were issued, three for false documents and seven for other offences.

The highest speed recorded with as much detail as possible are: 110 km/h in a 60 km/h zone, 156 km/h in an 80 km zone, 145 km/h in a 100 km zone and 164 km/h in a 120 km zone.

The department appeals to all drivers to obey the law and to respect their fellow drivers.
