Truck driver sentenced for Chabane’s death

Chabane’s car collided with Rikhotso’s truck on the N1 in Limpopo in March 2015 after Rikhotso had made an illegal U-turn.

POLOKWANE – The truck driver who caused the crash in which former Minister for Public Service and Administration, Collins Chabane, and his two bodyguards were killed was sentenced on Thursday (yesterday) in the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court.

Chabane’s car collided with 30-year-old Amukelani Rikhotso’s truck on the N1 in Limpopo in March 2015 after  Rikhotso had made an illegal U-turn. Chabane and his two bodyguards, Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane, died in the accident.

Rikhotso pleaded guilty to three counts of culpable homicide, one count of driving under the influence and one count of disobeying a traffic law in April 2016.

Rikhotso was sentenced to six years each for the first three counts of culpable homicide, three years for driving under the influence and two years for the traffic violation.

“The years will be served concurrently and he will have the right to appeal the sentence within 14 days,” explained Magistrate Jane Ngobeni.
