SPCA announces committee

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Polokwane held their annual general meeting recently where they announced the new members of the committee for next year.

POLOKWANE – “I am happy to report that our financial position is sound. This is mainly as a result of savings and strict financial control by our Treasurer, Eddy Caldera,” said Tania le Roux, Chairperson of the SPCA Committee.

“The SPCA obtained a Section 18A exemption number from SARS. This means donors can now claim tax money from SARS. All SARS related issues have been dealt with by our competent accountant and new dedicated committee member, Joyce van Niekerk.

Financial statements are available for viewing on request,” she said.

“We currently receive a monthly grant from the municipality. This grant is paid to reimburse the SPCA for running a small pound and deliver the associated services on behalf of the Polokwane Municipality,” she continued.

The main responsibility of the SPCA is the prevention of cruelty to animals. The task of getting animals adopted is an important function for this committee and they are currently keeping animals for much longer periods than they are supposed to, in order to try and find homes for them. They have the assistance of the Polokwane K9 Academy, who assists the SPCA with dogs that have behavioural problems. The K9 Academy only recently joined the SPCA and three of the Dalmatians they trained have been successfully rehabilitated and found homes. Tanya believes this will be a very successful partnership.

“Fully trained inspectors are very scarce but it is a national problem. We want to include career guidance in our school visiting program to inform learners about a possible career opportunity as a SPCA inspector.

“It gives me great pleasure to announce that we found an excellent manager for the SPCA premises. Hendrik de Kock joined us at the beginning of the year and has already made huge progress in bringing the SPCA premises up to standard,” she said.

Tanya wants to extend a big thank you to each and every committee member who volunteers their knowledge and time to run the SPCA administration.

She also thanked the staff who take care of the animals and the public for their continued support.

The new committee members are:
• Chairperson: Tania le Roux.
• Treasurer: Eddy Caldeira.
• Charity Shop employee: Debbie Mouton.
• Assistant Treasurer: Joyce van Niekerk.
• Secretary: Minette Espach.
• Additional Member: Selma Landman.
