UPDATE: 2 Limpopo teachers die in N1 accident

The teachers were on their way back home to Modimolle and Thabazimbi from Polokwane when the accident occurred

LIMPOPO – Two teachers of two schools in Limpopo died in a tragic accident on the N1 between Mokopane and Mookgophong last Wednesday after their vehicle collided with a truck.

According to a reliable source the teachers were on their way back to their houses in Modimolle and Thabazimbi after they attended a meeting in Polokwane when the accident occurred.

Kagiso Mootane, Departmental Spokesperson for the Department of Traffic, reported: “The driver of the sedan apparently lost control after one of the tyres burst and crashed into the truck”.

The driver of the sedan, a teacher at Susan Strijdom Special School in Modimolle, was rushed to the Netcare Pholoso-hospital in Polokwane after sustaining severe injuries. Her two passengers, Christelle Kotze (40) and Jermina Khiba (45) passed away on the scene.

Khiba was a teacher at Deo Gloria Primary School and Kotze was a teacher at Hoërskool Frikkie Meyer in Thabazimbi.

The Principal of Deo Gloria Primary, Phillip Mahlangu, told Bosveld: “Khiba was one of a kind. She was a member of several committees, a great Gr 6 teacher and her passing has left a big gap. She is truly missed by all.”

Colin Campbell, Principal of Hoërskool Frikkie Meyer said: “Kotze was a remarkable teacher and person. She is known throughout the province as she was one of the best netball umpire’s in Limpopo. She has left big footprints behind.”

Mootane further said the driver of the truck was only treated for light injuries at the Voortrekker Hospital in Mokopane.

Investigations are ongoing she concluded.
