Darren Ru van Rensburg dreams big

Theatre actor and upcoming writer, Darren Ru van Rensburg (18), says he hopes to one day write for and star in national television programmes

POLOKWANE – The young dreamer was born and bred in Westenburg, just outside Polokwane where he was raised by his grandmother Ruth van Rensburg.

He attended Paul Rapetswa’s Institution of Dramatic Arts (Prida), where he was mentored by playwright, Paul Rapetswa. Darren says he has honed his acting skills under the tuition of Rapetswa from the tender age of six.

“I was six years old when Rapetswa took me under his wing. He taught me how to read and interpret scripts,” he says.

He says he is inspired by his mentor and has loved acting form a young age. Growing up, he was known as the loud child and he never shied away from the spotlight.

He tells Capricorn Voice he has been acting for many years and is happy that he is recognised as an actor in the industry.

“I love theatre because that’s where I started. It is a great platform for young actors and writers to voice their concerns and show off their talents,” he explains.

Darren has featured in a number of plays, including Our Cry and Get Down, the most popular play written by Rapetswa.

“In Our Cry I play Putiki, a boy who grows up watching his father abuse his mother. The role definitely affected me, I learned that this is a reality for many children,” says Darren.

Darren decided to take a break from acting this year as he is a Gr 12 learner at Capricorn High School and wants to focus on his studies.

“I would love to study at AFDA, The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance, in Johannesburg.

Creating jobs is one of my goals which I look forward to doing after completing my studies.”
