The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club in Louis Trichardt is once again proud to be associated with National Science Week (NSW), an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
This countrywide celebration of science involves various stakeholders and role players conducting science-based activities during the week. National Science Week is run from 1 to 8 August in all nine provinces at multiple sites per province simultaneously.
The South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (Saasta), has been appointed by the DST as the implementing agency and play the role of coordinating and managing activities pertaining to the project.
This year the theme for NSW is ‘Science for sustainable development and improved quality of life’.
The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club will focus on Astronomy, space technology, Mathematics and science. Activities will include the opportunity to look through a telescope at the sun during daytime thanks to a specialised solar filter, and the moon, Saturn, stars and deep sky objects at night. Participants will also receive handout material pertaining to this year’s theme.
