ANC to get rid of corrupt councillors – Ramaphosa

He added that the performance of councillors would be scrutinised in the next five years

POLOKWANE – ANC Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has warned that the ANC will “get rid of corrupt and fraudulent councillors who behave like they own the ANC, and think they are untouchable”.

Rampahosa addressed an almost packed to capacity Peter Mokaba Sports Complex during the ANC Siyanqoba Rally on Sunday.

“The ANC does not need councillors whose daily routine is to drive around in fancy cars while they undermine what the people want. We don’t need those who steal government’s money and hire friends and relatives,” the deputy president said.

He added that the performance of councillors would be scrutinised in the next five years.

Ramaphosa’s speech comes as residents across South Africa are protesting against corrupt councillors.

In Polokwane, Disteneng and Ext 44 residents recently protested against the nomination of a ward councillor, saying she had done little to better their lives.

Ramaphosa also spoke on the imminent local government elections on 3 August and was confident the ruling party would once again win at the polls.

“Whether people like it or not, the ANC will win the election.”
