Madala strives to lead by example

At only 18 years old, Madala Mashigo already displays admirable leadership skills.

POLOKWANE – Madala is this year’s head boy at Noorderland High School and the Gr 12 learner does not only juggle his schoolwork and head boy responsibilities, he is also an avid rugby player.

He shared some of the reasons he thinks he was chosen to be a leader.

“I have good leadership and communication skills. I lead by example and I don’t tell people what to do, I show them,” Madala explained. According to him, respect is a key aspect of being a great leader. He said his aim for leading the school this year is to make sure all the learners perform well academically. He explained that the school always aims to make education the top priority.

After he completes Gr 12, Madala wants to study mine engineering at the University of Pretoria so he can pursue his dream of becoming a mine engineer.

“There are not many mine engineers in South Africa and I want to do something different because most of the people I talk to want to become doctors or lawyers. I am interested in this particular industry and I think I will do well,” he explained.

Madala’s advice to learners about performing well academically is: “You have to know how to balance everything properly, it is not easy but you’ll get the hang of it. I was told that things don’t come free, you have to work hard for what you want, no one will do it for you. If you want something go for it,” Madala concluded.
