The Polokwane branch of Jeppe Education Centre donated last Wednesday workbooks to the amount of R194 290 to Grade 12 learners from Vuwani currently attending a catch-up camp at Mastech College in Seshego. The workbooks comprise Physical Science, Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy and they intend donating books for Life Science too.
The 778 learners from nine different schools in Vuwani accommodated at Mastech College, were left without schooling following violent unrest and the burning down of around 30 schools in the Vuwani area. Subsequent intimidation of learners and teachers after mobile classrooms were delivered to the area by the Department of Education prevented further schooling.
Ruth Angoria, Deputy Principal of Jeppe Education Centre said this was not the first donations they made, as they also assisted other schools not doing so well and other centres where learners from Vuwani were accommodated.
The learners and the teachers at Mastech College were very happy to receive the workbooks. “It is a Godsend,” one of the teachers said.
The learners started writing their mid-year exams on Monday and will finish writing on 27 July with Business Studies and Physical Science 2 the last subjects to be written. “So far so good,” Naledzani Rasila, Head: Communications at the Department of Education said. The department will re-evaluate the situation after the learners have written their exams to decide on the way forward. Other learners in Vuwani are still not attending classes as a result of alleged intimidation.
