IEC officer expelled for rigging results in 2014 election

The misconduct was first discovered by a DA party agent when he noticed neither the EFF nor the DA received a single ballot vote

LIMPOPO –Ā The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has dismissed an IEC officer, Selina Langa, after she was found guilty of manipulating the election results in Musina in 2014.

The misconduct was first discovered by a DA party agent when he noticed neither the EFF nor the DA received a single ballot vote.

The DA member also discovered that his signature on both the national and provincial results slips had been forged.

Suspecting possible vote rigging, the DA laid a formal complaint with the IEC, which then ordered a vote recount at the station which exposed fraudulent activities.

Limpopo IEC Manager, Itumeleng Seanego, confirmed they had dismissed Langa for breaking the IEC’s Code of Conduct.

The person in question has been blacklisted and will not be able to work as an IEC officer anywhere in the country.

Langa was sentenced to 10 months’ imprisonment by the Musina Magistrate’s Court or a fine of R10 000 after being found guilty of manipulating election results.

DA Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle, said they welcomed the judgement.

“Critical to South Africa’s democracy is the ability of the IEC to hold regular free and fair elections and to this end it is incumbent upon everyone to hold all their officials accountable,” said Smalle.

The EFF was not available for comment by the timeĀ of publishing.
