Recycling facility helps to create jobs

He says the project was implemented within the working on waste focus area and the total budget allocated amounts to R3,5 million

LIMPOPO – In an effort to create jobs, the MEC for Economic Development, Seaparo Sekoati has opened a Waste Transfer Station Facility at Zebediela – Mathibela Village.

Sekoati says a total of 76 participants, of which 39 are women, 42 young people and one is a person with a disability, have been employed.

He says the project was implemented within the working on waste focus area and the total budget allocated amounts to R3,5 million.

“The transfer station will make solid waste collection more efficient and reduce the overall transportation costs, air emission, energy use, traffic and road wear and tear, and this saves the community money and lowers the cost of the solid waste management services,” says Sekoati.

He says the facility is an attempt by the department to curb the state of uncontrollable waste.

Lepelle-Nkumpi Municipality will also benefit from the Limpopo Province Youth Jobs in Waste Programme which caters for all 25 local municipalities in the province with a total budget of R65,5 million.

The project has appointed 491 young people from 2013 to 2015. The municipality also received 5 000 wheelie bins to sort out waste at the source and one Tuk Tuk motorbike to assist with the transportation of those who will be doing environmental awareness. Through this programme, the municipality has managed to employ at least one young person, which is a great achievement, the MEC says.

Lepelle-Nkumpi Mayor, Ivy Phaahla, says the project was completed in December 2015 with the following deliverables: construction of the transfer station platform, guard house, paving and palisade fence.
