Residents urged to stop circulating photo of ‘baby snatcher’

There is a photo of a man circulating on social media, who is accused of stealing children from local malls

POLOKWANE – It was alleged that the man attempted to steal a baby at Savannah Mall over the weekend, however, Savannah Mall manager, Karen Botha denied this.

Meanwhile, Sumari de Ridder, Mall of the North, general manager, confirmed that a couple complained to the Mall of the North management that a man had tried to steal their baby.

However, after thorough investigation into the allegation, it was found not to be true.

“Our security manager forwarded the photos to the complainant to get the man identified during the investigation, and these photos are now being spread around. We urge residents to stop doing this as it can land them in trouble with the law,” De Ridder advised.

Polokwane police spokesperson, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba, said it was against the law to spread photos of suspected wrongdoers on social media, as it could be seen as slander, which is regarded as an offence.
