Municipal Indigent plan- how it works

The Polokwane Municipality urges residents who are not able to pay their municipal account to register for the municipality's indigent support programme

POLOKWANE – “The indigent support programme is intended to give financial support in respect of municipal accounts to households that earn less than R3 500 a month. The policy has been reviewed to also cater for child headed families and the disabled,” says municipal spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo.

He says apart from the disabled, the municipality further grants 40% rebate to owners of residential property who depend on pension or social grants.

“Qualifying poor households will receive the following rebates or benefit support per month: water: 6 kl, electricity 100 kwh, refuse 100%, sewer 100%, assessment rates: below R100 000 of market value exempted,” Mothapo says.

He adds that this indigent support programme will benefit the poor and child headed households within the Polokwane Municipality.

The indigent programme applies to permanent residents of Polokwane who are South African citizens. The indigent subsidy is funded from the “equitable share” contribution received from National Treasury, plus an amount from the municipality’s own income.

The following items must accompany the application:

• The latest municipal account of the household

• Proof of the account holder’s identity

• Proof of income of the account holder (e.g. a letter from his / her employer, salary slip, pension card, (UIF) card, or a certificate to confirm registration as a job-seeker)
