POLOKWANE – Two rhinos have been shot and killed at the Polokwane Game Reserve yesterday.
A third rhino was injured and is being treated.
Of the poached rhinos, one was a cow, while the other was a bull calf.
A source revealed that the two rhinos were dehorned, while the cow’s intestines and eyes were removed. The bull calf had its tail and parts of its skin cut out.
Polokwane Municipality spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, said the municipality was not able to give more information on the incident as the Green Scorpion team, along with a special police task force, was still investigating the matter.
“The municipality strongly condemns the killing of the rhinos, and would look into beefing up security at the game reserve,” Mothapo said.
Polokwane police spokesperson, WO Lesiba Ramoshaba, confirmed that a case of rhino poaching was opened and was being investigated by the police stock theft unit.
No arrests have been made, he added.
