Polokwane City Library encourage father’s to read to their children

In an endeavour to celebrate fathers and to promote a culture of reading in society, the Polokwane City Library will host a Father's Day celebration on Saturday at the Polokwane City Library.

POLOKWANE – The main purpose of the event is to celebrate fathers and to encourage them to read to their children. The day will feature activities such as storytelling, reading sessions and library orientation. According to Granny Manaka, Senior Librarian of the Polokwane City Library, they have come to the realisation that fathers don’t read stories to their children. She said fathers should bring their children to the library on Saturday and take part in the various activities

“Fathers play a big role when it comes to providing for their families and disciplining their children but usually show less interest in their children’s academic activities. We want to use the event to promote a culture of reading within the community,” says Manaka.

She further says they couldn’t host the father’s day celebration last year but they are planning to make it an annual event.

Father’s Day is celebrated worldwide to recognise the contribution fathers and father figures make in the lives of their children. This day celebrates fatherhood and male parenting. Although it is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide, many countries celebrate this day on the third Sunday of June.

Manaka adds that they are expecting about 50 fathers and their children on the day.

The event caters for fathers with children aged between three and fourteen.
