EnergyFM’s dynamically smooth Lloyd Maila

A dynamic youth with a sharp mind are just some words that come to mind when you describe this radio host.

POLOKWANE – The bright and talented 26-year-old EnergyFM’s Lloyd Maila, hosts the City Nights show which is on air from 21:00 until 00:00.

Originally from Ga-Modjadji in Bolobedu, Lloyd recalls the timid young boy he used to be while growing up. “I grew up being very shy, quiet and doubting myself a lot, always shifting attention away from myself. However, I followed the advice a friend gave me to be myself and to believe in the power within and look at me now, I can’t get enough of myself,” he says jokingly.

Initially Lloyd enrolled in the medical field for his tertiary studies but soon realised that it was not for him.

“After matriculating from Modubatse Secondary School, I initially tried a pre-medical degree, and when that didn’t work out, I switched to study a B.Com majoring in internal audit, which I am still pursuing.”

He explains that along with his B.Com he is simultaneously studying towards a banking qualification.

Being on the radio, Lloyd says, is exactly where he wants to be. Some of the people who inspire him include the founders and management of Energy FM who he says groomed him into the industry professional he is today.

“Being able to learn on a daily basis from our family of listeners, to connect with them and feel like they are siblings, parents or cousins whom I have known and grown up with all my life are some of the things I love most about being a presenter. I attach very easily and I have definitely accustomed myself to the daily teachings the listeners spoil me with.”

He describes himself as a ferocious reader and explains he often becomes moody when he doesn’t have the opportunity to read. He spends some of his free time playing board games, listening to choral music and spending time and having fun with his friends and family.

“Radio is a powerful medium which has a special way of influencing society, it’s almost inexplicable. My role in this medium is to educate, help people relate to each other, and make them aware of what’s going on around them. My role is to break down stereotypes and not forget the value of entertainment and to help people see the lighter side of life by helping them find the humour in their trials and tribulations.”

Lloyd is a family man who says he wouldn’t be the man he is today without the strong leadership of the women in his family.

He says he owes thanks to the driven, ambitious and tenacious women in his family who inspire him as well as the many educators he has had along the way.
