‘It’s important to read to your kids’ – deputy minister

"Students and the community travelled 21km to town to get information for their studies, assignments and research, which was a challenge"

LIMPOPO – The deputy minister for sport, arts and culture, Rejoice Mabudafhasi has urged parents to read to their children before bedtime to help them gain “the wealth of knowledge necessary to empower their lives”.

Speaking during the recent hand-over of a modular library at Zamani Primary School in Nkuri village outside Giyani, Mabudafhasi said the love of books was better instilled at a young age.

She said government had shown its commitment to promote a culture of reading through the Community Library Conditional Grant, which aimed to improve the library sector through infrastructure and library materials, including the provision of a platform for free internet access.

The rest is on the shoulders of parents to encourage kids to read

The library was initiated by Norah Ngobeni, a resident in the village, who wrote to the Deputy President, Cyril Ramaphosa around 2013 requesting a library to be built to help kids in her village to gain access to information.

“Students and the community travelled 21km to town to get information for their studies, assignments and research, which was a challenge.

“At the time I never thought my letter would be responded to, but I’m happy that they did not only respond to my letter, but they brought a library here at home for the kids and the community,” she said.
