Residents applaud departments intervention

Motorists in Hans van Rensburg Street were very happy with the Polokwane Traffic Department over the past week.

POLOKWANE –  Motorists told Review traffic officials were on the scene since the early morning, issuing tickets and warning people who did not obey traffic rules. “To see traffic rule violators finally being brought to book is something that we have been looking forward to for a very long time. People drive and park in the street without regard for traffic rules or other motorists. It makes things difficult for the rest of us who also need to use the road,” said Nicole van Staden, a motorist.

She explained that she would be forced to turn in the wrong lane as motorists would block lanes in the street for no apparent reason right on the corner of crossings. “These people have been turned away now and some have even been given traffic tickets for not abiding by the rules. This means that traffic was flowing where it used to be slowed down or even brought to a standstill in some cases,” she said.

Polokwane Municipality Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, said the operation was implemented to get motorists to abide by the law and rules of the road. In his budget speech recently, the Traffic Department’s MEC, Mokaba Pukwane said the department is going to roll out even more projects aimed at getting motorists to stay within the law. “This strategy proved to be very successful and will be followed in the future.” Transport spokesperson Kagiso Mootane told Review.
