Man arrested for setting wife on fire

"The woman was badly burnt on the chest, shoulders and stomach"

LIMPOPO – The 39-year-old man who dosed his wife (30) with petrol and set her alight on Tuesday morning will appear in the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court on 20 June, where he will apply for bail.

The man appeared in court yesterday (Wednesday) where he faced a charge of attempted murder. The was remanded to 20 June for a formal bail application.

Lebowakgomo police spokesperson, WO Manong Tsehla, said the incident occurred when the woman was waiting for the bus to work in Polokwane.

“The suspect emerged, dosed her with petrol and set her alight. The woman was badly burnt on the chest, shoulders and stomach,” said Tsehla.

Tsehla said the woman was rescued by a passer-by and the police were alerted.

“Unconfirmed information says the two were in the process of getting a divorce, but more information will be revealed in court,” said Tsehla.
