No mid-year exams for learners in Vuwani

The situation remains volatile despite the delivery of 74 mobile classrooms by the department of education to schools which were affected by the violent protests

LIMPOPO – Over 50 000 learners in and around Vuwani are not writing their mid-year examinations as schooling remains on hold due to clashes in the area relating to municipal demarcation.

The situation remains volatile despite the delivery of 74 mobile classrooms by the department of education to schools which were affected by the violent protests.

Department spokesperson, Dr Naledzani Rasila, confirmed that the situation remained tense as learners and teachers were being intimidated.

He said the department would devise a catch-up plan once the situation had returned to calm.

He admitted it was a problematic position to be in for Gr 12 learners who needed mid-year marks to apply for enrollment at institutions of higher learning.

“We trust the inter-ministerial committee and the traditional leadership reach an amicable solution,” said Rasila, referring to a meeting that was scheduled for this week.

Spokesperson for the traditional leaders who oppose the inclusion of the Vuwani area in the newly formed municipality, Chief Jeffrey Ramovha said they had taken the demarcation matter to the Constitutional Court.
