Ramadan: a month of blessings

For millions of Muslims around the world, the holy month of Ramadan is approaching, and fasting will begin on 7 June

POLOKWANE – Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and is observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting.

It commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad according to Islamic belief. This annual observance is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and the month lasts for 29 to 30 days based on the visual sightings of the crescent moon.

Fasting occurs from dawn until sunset, and in that time, Muslims will refrain from eating, drinking liquids, smoking and engaging in sexual relations. It is also a month where one has to refrain from using vulgar language, fighting, gossiping or lying as this is seen as negating the reward of fasting.

Spiritual rewards for fasting are also believed to be multiplied within the month of Ramadan and the month includes an increase in prayer, as well as reciting the Quran.
