Sophonia (Sophie) Chauke, a man living his dream

Seshego born, Sophonia (Sophie) Chauke, is a 42-year-old man living out his dream with paint and brushes.

POLOKWANE – “I work part time now and when I have the time, I paint. I started painting in Gr 7 after I won first place in art class for a pencil drawing of Nelson Mandela.”

Sophie says that although he is not married he has two children who he adores.

“Painting relaxes me. I enjoy to paint abstract art, unfortunately not everyone understands it. When I get angry, I just turn to my artwork and put a lot of colours together. I usually feel better after that.” He loves working with oil and acrylic paints.

“My favourite thing to paint is a landscape. No one can tell you how it is supposed to look. I do portraits on request, but they are more difficult.”

Sophie says painting people is tough, with landscapes, you have more freedom of expression.

He draws to relax and spoil himself and he can paint any time of the day, however, when he needs to finish a work of art for a client, he works non-stop until it is complete.

Sophie is in need of an agent who will negotiate fair prices for his work. “I have a tendency to undercharge for my art and an agent will be able to help me get more reasonable prices for my art,” he says.
